Tuesday: 10 am - 6 pm

Saturday: 10 am - 5 pm 

Face masks are encouraged when visiting the library. Masks may be required for ages 5 and up when attending indoor programs, for reference and tech help appointments, and at any time when COVID-19 community level is high.

If you or a family member are experiencing symptoms of illness including fever, cough, or shortness or breath, please postpone your visit.

A Tisbury Special Town Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022 at 7:00pm at the Martha's Vineyard High School Performing Arts Center -- View the warrant here.

Frye Gaillard: The Southernization of America
Join us for a talk by Frye Gaillard, co-author (with Cynthia Tucker) of 'The Southernization of America: A Story of Democracy in the Balance, a compelling series of linked essays considering the role of the South in shaping America's current political and cultural landscape.  Tucker and Gaillard bring a multiracial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history, a time of racial reckoning and democracy under siege. Martha's Vineyard Poetry Reading Group

This is an interactive group that meets monthly on Zoom. The meeting leader selects a poem(s), from the earliest Greeks to contemporary, to be read and discussed as a community, which always adds new dimensions to understanding. The MV Poetry Reading Group has been meeting for over 10 years and wants to stress how much more we get out of the poems when shared and discussed.

Yoga with Kat : Chair Yoga for Arthritis

Kat LeBlanc of Yoga With Kat will lead 6 sessions of Chair Yoga starting September 12th. Chair Yoga is one of the most gentle forms of yoga. This class is perfect for students recovering from injury or illness, and anyone who wants to experience the many benefits of yoga without having to get up and down from the floor. These sessions will focus on yoga for people who are seeking relief from arthritis. Join us for 1 or all 6 sessions, in-person downstairs at the library.

Another Summer of Drawing with Elizabeth Whelan

Join artist Elizabeth R. Whelan for a series of 19 free intermediate-level drawing classes. She will be focusing on technique, good 'starts' for drawings, and how to move beyond simple representation to bring personal concepts into your work. The classes are aimed at adults who are brushing up on their drawing skills (or just starting out), however, all are welcome.  Register for the series

Wednesday Walk the Chop
Walk and Talk Book Club has become ''Walk the Chop'. We will meet every Wednesday at the Library and walk/run or any combination the West Chop loop. Course is not hilly and is just over 3 miles. Come enjoy a lively discussion online! Monthly book selections are available as Overdrive eBooks as well as in print format via request. Everyone is invited to join us. Book club selections include contemporary fiction and the occasional memoir or non-fiction. Everyone is invited to join us. Eat Your Veggies Workshop

Want to eat more greens but think salads are boring? Think again! Highlighting local greens, tomatoes, and other vegetables, join us for a salad making workshop at the West Tisbury Library lead by Triva Emery from Be-Well MV. Focus will be on ‘eating the rainbow’ and will highlight local produce. Make and take home a salad for lunch/dinner, containers provided. A collaboration between the WT and VH libraries and BeWellMV, this his program is made possible through federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commission. Vineyard Haven Writers Row Literary Walking Tour
A stroll through Vineyard Haven’s West Chop , illuminating stories of the great American writers, including Lillian Hellman, John Hersey, Art Buchwald and Mike Wallace. This tour features the former homes (from a distance along Main Street) and favorite haunts, and Vineyard stories. Tour will commence at the Bandstand in Owen Park and last approximately 90 minutes. Led by Native Islander and Amateur Historian Wayne Nichols. No registration or sign up required.

Film Screening: North by Northwest

In conjection with an online Hitchcock lecture next Tuesday the 27th, the OBPL is screening North by Northwest, a 1959 American spy thriller produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. This will be an in-person screening at the OB library with the virtual presentation by Brian Rose to be held the following Tuesday, September 27th (contact [email protected] for Zoom link). Several of Hitchcock's films can also be viewed online for free through the library's Kanopy service, including Dial M for Murder, Foreign Correspondant, and The Lady Vanishes.

The Crisis in Ukraine in Historical Perspective

The Crisis in Ukraine in Historical Perspective: A Virtual Talk with Professor Michael Strmiska

Professor Michael Strmiska will offer an historical overview from Kyivan Rus as an original Ukrainian/Russian state circa 1000 through the creation of independent Ukraine at the end of the Soviet Union in 1991; Ukraine's relationship with East and West: with Russia and the EU and USA; Russian seizure of Crimea and Russian-Ukrainian Conflict in the Eastern Ukrainian Donbas region; Russia’s attack on Eastern Ukraine; Putin's rejection of Ukraine’s existence as an independent nation, and the role of Russian propaganda. 

SUNY Orange Global Studies Professor Michael Strmiska is a scholar of World History and a researcher of eastern and northern Europe. As a Fulbright Fellow, he was a visiting lecturer at Šiauliai University in Lithuania in 2004, and has been a guest lecturer for Vilnius University in Lithuania. He was a visiting professor at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic in 2015, and in 2020 was a Fulbright Fellow teaching at R?ga Stradi?š University in Latvia. Dr. Strmiska has traveled extensively in Eastern Europe, including Poland, Hungary, Estonia, Croatia, Russia, and Ukraine. In 2017, he was chosen as a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award, Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. He holds a B.A. from Hampshire College, an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Ph.D. from Boston University. He is the author of "Modern Paganism in World Cultures: Comparative Perspectives," and is currently working on a book tentatively entitled "Unchristian Eastern Europe: Pagans, Jews, Gypsies and Muslims." He also has published articles on new religious movements in Iceland, Lithuania, and Latvia.

Vineyard Haven Library Building Fund

Thank you for those who attended our in-person fundraising event with Geraldine Brooks on Wednesday evening! 

The event was sponsored by the Library Building Fund, a 501c3 nonprofit formed to raise the funds needed to build a new community meeting room that will adjoin the library garden. So far the capital campaign has raised more than 1 million dollars, bringing us more than halfway to meeting our goal.  An open, spacious, and well-ventilated space for our community is more important than ever. The expanded and redesigned interior and exterior spaces will provide the flexibility the library requires to provide future services with greater safety and comfort.
