Current and former state legislators blast Hogan for his anti-choice record

Women leaders from across Maryland are blasting lifelong Republican Larry Hogan for calling himself “pro-choice” despite his well-documented and extensive record opposing abortion rights, including his harmful 2022 veto of legislation to expand abortion access in Maryland.

Below are statements released on May 22nd, from real pro-choice leaders who served in the state legislature when Hogan vetoed legislation to expand abortion access in the Free State:

“I know Republican Larry Hogan, because I’ve stood up to him when it comes to defending a woman’s right to choose and a woman’s right to privacy to make her own health care decisions,” said Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller. “The truth is that both before and during his time as governor, Hogan repeatedly sought to restrict abortion access in Maryland. I know Maryland, and I know we will hold him accountable for his record in November 2024.”

“Given his record as Governor, it’s insulting that Republican Larry Hogan thinks he can now convince voters that he supports protecting abortion rights,” said Maryland House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones. “Hogan refused to sign legislation to protect abortion clinic funding from the Trump administration and right before Roe v. Wade was overturned, Hogan vetoed a bill to expand abortion access in Maryland and refused to release funding to increase the number of abortion providers in the State. He can’t be trusted on this issue.”

“Marylanders remember when – just two short years ago – Republican Larry Hogan vetoed legislation to expand abortion access in our state,” said Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman. “We stopped him then and we’ll stop him again. Marylanders know that a vote for Larry Hogan will turn the U.S. Senate over to Republicans who want to pass a nationwide abortion ban.”
