Expressions of History How will you express and show history? Using different art materials, express a moment in time by drawing, painting or creating an assemblage with found objects.
Painting a Still Life Explore the exhibition, Feast Your Eyes and discover the fun techniques for painting a fruit and vegetable still life. Create your own arrangement and then learn how to use paint, color and brushstrokes to paint your still life.
Wire Plant Jewelry Create your special gift for the holidays. Create bugs, flowers or just fun abstract ornaments using wire and beads to create colorful jewelry or tiny sculptures for your plants at home or to give as a special gift.
Stepping Stones Learn and discover what architectural elements make gardens extraordinary to look at in the exhibition, Feast Your Eyes: The Unexpected Beauty of Vegetable Gardens. Create your own stepping-stone as an architectural element for your garden.
A Garden of Your Own SPRING ONLY Discover the unique places and spaces gardens are found and learn about the beauty and function of their design in the new exhibition Feast Your Eyes. What kind of garden will you design? Start your very own garden, using egg cartons, to take home and inspire you to build your own garden in unique spaces and places.
Found Sculptures Discover the beauty of natural objects Explore the shape, color and texture of these found objects and use them to create an assemblage sculpture for your garden.
Press, Frame and Hang SPRING ONLY Bring the beauty of the Garden State indoors. Explore the exhibition, Feast Your Eyes to learn how New Jersey is really the Garden State. Then learn how to press flowers and leaves using old phone books. Use pressed flowers and leaves to create a collage. Frame it and hang it up! Painting History: Introduction to Painting for Families Explore the What’s Going On? exhibition. Look at Jacob Lawrence’s images that tell the story of the “Great Migration”. What colors did he use? Move on to the classroom and experiment with colors to create form and composition. What story would you tell through your paintings?
Ground Rules: Drawing Introduction for Families Visit our exhibitions and examine different types of objects. What do you see? Learn to see, “feel” and draw flowing lines and shapes that are found on everyday objects. Use these design elements or “ground rules” to draw your own New Jersey postcard.
Wrap it Up Explore our exhibition, Feast Your Eyes and learn how vegetable gardens have been used to motivate a nation, admired as much as flowers and used for family meals. Then make your own garden wrap with your choice of vegetables. Add a little of this and that and enjoy!
