Visit the Museum Auditorium gallery to see a new exhibit of decorative art tiles, made in New Jersey. In the late 19th century, New Jersey was the national center for the production of art tiles. Used to decorate home interiors, these beautiful decorative tiles featuring flowers, portraits and landscapes represented the pinnacle of American craftsmanship in the ceramic arts.

One example on view in the main museum building in “Remembering the Revolution” (2nd floor landing) is a rare tile depicting George Washington, made by Mueller Mosaic Company of Trenton. Tile artist Herman Mueller made it for Robert Chambers Belville, a close friend and colleague at the School of Industrial Arts in Trenton. More tiles by Mueller are on view in the new Art Tiles exhibition.

Visit the State Museum during Patriot’s Week to see examples of these New Jersey-made tiles.
