Stacy Garrop: Becoming Medusa

Saint Saëns, Piano Concerto No. 2

      George Li, Piano

Brahms, Symphony No. 2

Stacy Garrop is our Mellon-supported Composer-Educator Partner.  This concert is a chance for our public to meet her, although she’ll be back a number of times throughout the season.  She is an extremely winning, brilliant young composer who lives in Chicago.  “Becoming Medusa” is a tone-poem which begins with a musical portrait of the hideous Gorgon, then imagines in retrospect what she was like before the Gods turned her into a grotesque monster.  George Li is an astounding 14-year-old piano virtuoso.  He’s appeared often in concert and on television, including the “Martha Stewart Show” and “From the Top.”  He lives in Boston.  The Brahms Second Symphony is one of the towering masterpieces of the Romantic period, and features one of the greatest of all cello melodies in its second movement.
