NoticeTZHS's Graduation Day Surrounded By Atmospheric Uncertainty......and in one final grand gesture to TZHS's Class of 2010, the skies smiled down on the TZ field, and Graduation 2010 got underway. Under near perfect conditions, and surrounded by reports of tornado watches, hail, road closures, declarations of emergency, and severe weather chaos in nearby areas, the field of Tappan Zee HS was awash in red and white as 269 seniors made their way down to the field on their final walk as the Class of 2010. They listened to the speeches, responded appropriately to all the kind words, and wishes for the future, and, finally, one by one, they walked across the stage to receive their diploma and to begin a very new chapter in each of their lives.

EASO Retirement DinnerThe place to be on June 16th was the Rockleigh Country Club. SOCSD staff and their guests honored the accomplishments of this year's retirees, Mary Ceccolini, Betty White, Sue Foster, Evelyn Murphy and Cheryl Tortora at the annual EASO retirement dinner. The retirees were praised highly for their dedication and hard work. After a few tears were shed, South Orangetown staff celebrated their co-workers successes with good food and good times. Congratulations to all of the retirees. May you have a long and wonderful retirement.
One Man's Trash is Another Man's TreasureBack in March, students in Mr. Onativia and Mrs. Wagner's classes videoconferenced with Andy Fowler, a parent at Cottage Lane, who was on assignment in Haiti. As an engineer for NBC, he was covering the earthquake disaster. The ability to communicate directly with the media gave students firsthand knowledge of the devastation.
"When Mr. Fowler told us that 90% of the schools were destroyed, it made me want to do more," stated Mathew Russell.
Since then Mrs. McBride has been in contact with Mission of Hope, a school in Haiti. Students decided to collect unwanted school supplies before school was let out. From gently used notebooks to unwanted markers, the donations came pouring in. The staff at Cottage Lane generously donated the cost of shipping. The ability to help those less fortunate was a great way to end the school year.
TZHS Freshman honored by NAMITZ Freshman Ben Yassky was honored by the Rockland chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness at their annual awards dinner on June 16 at The View restaurant in Piermont.
In the NAMI Journal, Ben wrote: "For the past two years, I have been a mentor and big brother to a boy whose mother struggled with mental illness and was unable to care for him. Last month, my young friend's mother died tragically and I supported him through the trauma and grief of the funeral and days that followed. We have both grown since our meeting and I have matured and acquired a new sense of responsibility to him".
Local public officials attending the ceremony were Rockland County Legislator John Murphy, Rockland Commissioner of Mental Health Mary Ann Walsh-Tozer and the Rockland District Attorney Thomas Zugibe.
