In the late 40's in Cuba, a group of young musicians started writing songs deeply influenced by what they saw as the tonal freedom of American Jazz. They distanced themselves from the taste of their day and started a trend that would have a profound influence on modern Cuban music. While the movement hasn't been all that well documented, it gave birth to a new genre which in the 1960's would come to be known as Nueva Trova. Juan Carlos Formell, a grammy-nominated cuban musician who has been living in the US since 1993, has just recorded an album which pays tribute to feeling. Johnny's Dream Club, as he's calling it, was the name of the club which gave a home to a lot of the early feeling musicians. Juan Carlos Formell is a 4th generation Cuban musician with a rare ear for new compositions which meld a sense of tradition with a groundbreaking and powerful writing style.
