Mission:
The Movement Theatre Company is a group of young leaders who seek to create and support diverse representations of people of color in the media. By cultivating artists, we seek to redefine the way the world sees us. We are ready to create work that reflects OUR experience. We are ready to work within the community to build up young people and to share with our elders. We are ready to break the bonds that keep communities chained to ignorance, inactivity and stereotypes. No longer content to wait, WE ARE READY TO MOVE!
About Us:
We, The Movement, are a group of performers, writers, choreographers and directors who create work that supports alternative representations of people of color in the media and the arts.
Our membership is composed of talented individuals who acknowledge the power of representation. Therefore we have members that are dedicated to seeing positive social change in their communities . We achieve that by encouraging member to tell their own stories by writing. We also do that by focusing our attention on finding and cultivating new/old playwrights that either have work or need the support to create work that speaks from their experience. Our emphasis on creating changed doesn’t stop with just writing, we’d also deem it necessary to connect with younger generations. As an organization we have done a few programs/event geared exclusively to young people. Although as we grow we’d like to connect with an after-school program to work with young people interested in theater. We’ve begun to develop a curriculum that would have students examine playwrights of the past, and then through their exploration find comfort in creating their own short plays.
We believe that we are amongst a generation of young people fighting for a voice to express our diverse experiences. For this reason, The Movement aims to be a resource and support for artists, audiences, and academics who are ready to claim their voice and embrace their influence in order to change the world through our art. With an undeniable fresh voice that sets us apart from others, we are interested in beginning a new wave of theatre.
