Mothers. They run the gamut from Donna Reed to Joan Crawford. No matter what kind YOU have, take time to appreciate all the little things she does –at least for ONE day!

The origins of Mother’s Day stretch all the way back to ancient festivals honoring the mother goddess. But the holiday as we know it began in 1907 when Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia decided to create an occasion to honor her deceased mother.Over the next couple of years, she spearheaded a letter-writing campaign to make it “official” and in 1914, Congress passed legislation declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.It’s since become the busiest day for restaurants and phone companies, and among the top days for florists, greeting card manufacturers and jewelers.Seems all that guilt really pays off in the end!

Here are some more fun facts:

-Carnations are the “official” flower of Mother’s Day.A red one commemorates a living mother, while a white one represents the deceased.

-Many of the sweaters worn by TV’s “Mr. Rogers” on “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood,” were knitted by his mother.

-The highest recorded number of children born to one mother is 69!Between 1725 and 1765, the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev of Shuya, Russia gave birth to16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets. 67 of them survived infancy.

-Elvis Presley was one of history’s biggest “mama’s boys.”His mother Gladys walked him to school every day, made him take his own silverware so he wouldn’t “catch” anything, and forbade him to go swimming or do anything else that might be dangerous. The two even had their own baby-talk “language.”
