Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need. The first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C., March 1913. Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930. |
Staten Island Alumnae Chapter was chartered on January 20, 1996 by 23 members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. SIAC awarded its first scholarship, provided mentor and tutorial support to youth, organized our first May Week program and received the Eastern Region Social Action award during the Eastern Regional Conference - all within the first 6 months of its chartering. Later the same year, we quickly instituted the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy after-school program, which continues to be one of our most successful programs.
Today, the Staten Island Alumnae Chapter continues to build upon our vision and expand our mission for the Staten Island community through a variety of programs, which include: two annual college scholarships, co-sponsoring a Christmas party with the Staten Island Mental Health Society, donating Thanksgiving food baskets, sponsoring a Black History Month Program, and participating annually in the Breast Cancer charity walks.
