Emeline Long Earl

Emeline Long Earl the only documented Staten Island woman to have gone into service during the Civil War has rested in an unmarked grave for 86 years until May 2012. With donations from Staten Islander's the Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries purchased a grave stone commemorating her service and life. Emeline went into service with her brother in law who was in the new profession veternarian in 1861, shortly she would become a nurse in the Union Army. She was wounded in 1865 and would spend the rest of her life in and out of Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. She died in 1926 and was buried with full military honors provided by GAR Post 248.
