Oklahoma City is both the capital of and largest city in Oklahoma. It ranks 31st among United States cities in population. It was settled on April 22, 1889 when the area was opened in what became known as “The Oklahoma Land Run.” About 10,000 homesteaders created a tent city in the area in a single day (those who snuck over the border the night before to stake their claim were called “Sooners”). Ten years after the Land Run, the population of Oklahoma City had doubled.

Primary industries for Oklahoma City include stockyards, agriculture and oil production, although in recent years, information technology and health services have also become major employers. In 2008, Forbes magazine named the city “the most recession-proof” in America, due to its low unemployment and strong housing market.

As a major stop on the Interstate Highway System, Oklahoma City is mentioned in the classic song, “(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.” The city made international news in 1995 when domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh set off a bomb in front of the Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people.

Some famous residents of Oklahoma City include broadcasting legend Walter Cronkite, actor Lon Chaney, Jr. musician Vince Gill, TV’s “Dr. Phil,” and baseball star Johnny Bench. Oklahoma City was the site of the world’s first parking meter, installed in 1935 and the first grocery store shopping cart, introduced in 1937. It’s also home to the Cowboy Hall of Fame.
