‘Native Symbols’ Art Exhibit Explores Cultural Conflicts

Gresham, Ore. — In the hazy borderland between the native and modern worlds, conflict exists between western consumerism and Indian culture. Artist and urban Shoshone Indian Rochelle Kulei explores this tension through her art, which will be on display at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC).

“Native Symbols” is influenced by her ancestors’ stories and reflects the important of living in the past, present and future, intertwined with “the sacred wheel.”

“I want viewers of all people of different cultures who have suffered as a result of the dominant culture to see that paying attention to their inner self will bring them the most joy,” says Kulei.

Kulei’s art will be displayed in the Fireplace Gallery Tuesday, Nov. 3 to Friday, Nov. 27. The Fireplace Gallery is located in the College Center Lounge on the Gresham Campus and is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
