The City of Spray is located adjacent to the John Day River in east central Wheeler County. It lies in a bend of the John Day River and is known as the gateway to river recreation and a sportsman paradise. A popular public boat launch stands at the heart of the community. The Spray Pioneer Museum is also a well-known attraction. The community is centrally located between all three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

Spray is a small agricultural community with a post office, two stores, two cafes, two gas stations, a motel, and other small business. The community has a K-12 school with approximately 80 students, a preschool and a dormitory (boarding house) that usually houses 6 exchange students.

State Highway 19/207 divides the town north to south. The approximate elevation of Spray is 1,772 feet above mean sea level. The area receives about 13.88 inches of rainfall per year. The city was incorporated in 1958. The current population of the town is 160 and has remained relatively constant over the past four decades.
