AmericanTowns Heroes: My Brother's Keeper: Helping the Homeless Keep Warm

Flo Wheatley's story started nearly 30 years ago when she met a homeless man who helped her and her son.

It was when Flo and her son Leonard were resting after one of Leonard's cancer treatments. They had to stop before going into the subway because Leonard was getting sick. It was raining and Leonard was feeling the ill effects of chemotherapy. Flo took a moment to say a prayer asking for help and the next thing she knew a homeless man had scooped up their luggage and was leading them through the subway— and on and off the trains they needed to take to their destination. Twenty minutes later he was gone as quickly as had had come into their lives, but his image would stay with Flo and it wasn't long before she started thinking about how she could help him and others like him.
