HCM Foundation will hold its inaugural Fox CHASE AWAY CANCER event with proceeds going to Fox Chase Cancer Center patients and the HCM Foundation College Scholarship Program. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Aug. 7, 2010, at Saint Basil Academy in Jenkintown, Pa., the event will include a 5K run, a 1.5 mile walk, and a .5 mile kids’ run followed by the presentation of two $1,000 college scholarships.
The Fox Chase Cancer Center is the only hospital in the Philadelphia region solely devoted to cancer treatment, research and prevention.
“We organized the Fox CHASE AWAY CANCER event to be a celebration and recognition of the passionate and dedicated Fox Chase Cancer Center employees,” said Mike Marsteller, founder of HCM Foundation. “Additionally, it will bring the community together in a powerful display of support for those afflicted with cancer.”
The Fox Chase Cancer Center social work department regularly partners with the HCM Foundation to choose cancer patients and families to receive funds raised by the foundation. Proceeds from the Fox CHASE AWAY CANCER event’s entry fees will go directly to Fox Chase patients to assist with groceries, medical bills, travel expenses, and other needs.
Part of the proceeds will also fund two $1,000 scholarships to be presented at the conclusion of the event through the HCM Scholarship Foundation Program. One of the recipients will be Erica Lalli, who lost her father to prostate cancer in May 2001 and whose mother is now cancer-free following early detection of her breast cancer in November 2000. Lalli’s experience with her parents’ bouts against cancer has motivated her to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner. She will attend Penn State University this fall.
Employees and patients, past and present, of the Fox Chase Cancer Center are invited to participate in the Fox CHASE AWAY CANCER event as well as family, friends, and those in the community wanting to join in the fight against cancer.
