Allegheny Country Rifle Club

History:

The Allegheny Country Rifle Club of Allegheny County was organized in October 1896 by American citizens of German origin, through the effort of Capt. Henry Heck. The Club has entered into the 25th year of existence and, like a good many other societies, had its troublesome days before reaching the goal set by the Society. Twelve years have passed by before the Club could be put on a business like basis. The financial standing of the treasury was very small and we were badly in need of a Club house.

In January 1909 Carl A. Mehrlich was elected President of the Society, which position he still occupies. Through his guidance and fundamental manner the Club was put on a solid financial basis, and on the 1 st day of February 1911 the Danner's Farm of 42 acres was purchased for $8,500.00. Construction of a Club house began at once and on the 7th day of May 1911 the corner stone was laid. Since then a considerable lot of improvements have been made to beautify the place and make it suitable for Picnic purposes, as one of the most nicest places in the Evergreen Valley.

The financial burden, which rested with overwhelming weight over our property, was very discouraging. Certain members, who through their sarcastic actions against the management of the Club, made the burden heavier, but those vigorous men, who had the power of endurance, fought their way to victory and succeeded to pay off the debt on the property on the 22nd day of June 1921, although there were thousands of dollars spent on repairs and new improvements.

The Schuetzen Park will be for our later generation a symbol of good fellowship and it is only to hope that the standard of the Allegheny Country Rifle Club will always be upheld by our members.
