2015 Overview

Mission: The Mission of the Cancer Association of Anderson (CAA) is to provide information and referral, emotional support as well as financial assistance to cancer patients, cancer survivors and their families living in Anderson County, S.C.

History: CAA was chartered in March 2003 by a group of cancer survivors, physicians, nurses and others with a vital interest in cancer in Anderson County. Since its founding, CAA has operated in an older house on Calhoun Street near Downtown Anderson. Currently CAA is staffed by two full-time employees and one part-time independent contractor.

Patient Census: In 2015, CAA opened new case files for 356 new patients and an additional 38 who had been in remission were moved back to active status. The staff served an average of 153 different patients per month.  We had 36 new patients from Cancer Centers of the Carolinas and 23 new patients from Upstate Oncology - St. Francis.

Financial Assistance: CAA provided financial assistance to an average of 123 patients per month in 2015, spending in excess of $152,473. Money for mileage to and from doctor's appointments and transportation to distant medical facilities are the predominant expenditures.

Other Services: CAA provided free wigs and hats to women losing their hair during treatment, hosted two free support groups and operated an 8-week Survivor School which was attended by 10 female patients after their treatment was completed. Additionally, CAA funded 24 patients through AnMed Health's Oncology Rehabilitation program of exercise and education for survivors.

Funding: CAA is operated through the generous donations from the public, grants and funds raised by events such as the Concert of Hope and Remembrance as well as the Girlfriends' Tea. Financial support from churches is designated for prescription medicine purchases under the Church Medicine Ministry. *CAA receives no money from the American Cancer Society, a separate national organization.
