Church of Christ in Katy

5458 East Fifth Street
281-391-7606

History

The church met together for the first Lord's day worship assembly on Sunday, May 16,1976.

On the Wednesday evening preceding that Sunday (May 12, 1976) there were nineteen gathered for the "first prayer meeting". Among those present were Clodis and Audrey Cox, Clyde and Judy Wehunt (and their son Dean) and Doug and Mary Sheppard (with their four children).

In February of 1977, Clodis Cox and Clyde Wehunt were selected to serve as elders. In 1978 Jack Finley was added to the eldership. Since that time, Wendell Autrey, Cecil Hutson, Terry Pope, Doug Sheppard, and Joe Simmons have been added by the church to the body of elders. Brother Finley resigned from the eldership when he and his wife Jill moved to Weatherford to enjoy retirement years. Brother Cox resigned because of the pressure of business affairs, but he and Audrey continue to be faithful and wonderful servants in the Lord's work in Katy. Brother Pope resigned from the eldership when he and his family moved to Abilene where he is now a professor at Abilene Christian University. During 1993, brother Clyde Wehunt resigned from the eldership after serving in that capacity since 1977.

From the original building (a wood fram building serving as an auditorium and classrooms) there have been three major building programs plus the acquisition of what are called the "office building" and the "preacher's house". The main auditorium building was constructed in 1979. The educational building was constructed in 1986, but the upstairs portion was not completed. In 1980 additional property was purchased to provide for much needed parking space, and the upstairs part of the educational building was completed. A concrete and well-lighted parking lot was also completed in 1990.

In the early years, brethren Justice Wilson and Everett Cox preached for the church. Brother J. D. Cash was the first "full time" preacher for the church meeting on Fifth Street and came here in 1979. In January of 1983 brother John Featherston began his work, and he remained here until June of 1984. Brother Cecil Hutson moved to Katy and began his work with the church in January of 1985 and continues to work with the church as its preacher.

From its beginning with thirty-five people in the assembly, the church has grown to a membership of over four hundred members. Brother Wendell Autrey, Cecil Hutson, Doug Sheppard, and Joe Simmons presently serve as elders of the church with twenty-five men who are serving as deacons.
