Ferguson Township was formed in 1801, was named for Thomas Ferguson, an early settler who operated a mill in the Village of Pine Grove Mills at the base of Tussey Mountain. In the early nineteenth century, a number of other small settlements were established, including Gatesburg, an iron ore producing center; Pattonville, which later merged with Pine Grove Mills; Rock Springs, settled by David Mitchell in 1812 and  Richard Bailey's Baileyville. The Township is home to one of the seven recognized high technology centers in the Commonwealth.   Much of the technology has been developed for the defense industry, but since the end of the Cold War, these technology based industries have made the transition to production of domestic products using the military technology developed.

Ferguson Township is a diversified community, combining the characteristics of residential life with those of high-technology industry and agriculture interests. These attributes make possible a high quality of life for the people of our township - a place where families can enjoy nature at its best, work in a pleasant environment, and take part in the region's recreational, social, and cultural events.
