First Baptist Church Of Amory

303 First Avenue
662-256-7131

FBC Amory was organized in 1888 in the Collins Hotel, then under construction. Members were seated on the "sleepers." The lot for the future church building was donated (deeded) by the railroad at the corner of First Avenue and Third Street. The first building was a wood structure, consisting of one long room in the "shotgun" style. The various Sunday School classes met in different parts of the one room. Bro W. L. Gideon was the first pastor. There were 24 charter members, according to the files of the Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission. Baptists were the first to erect a building in Amory. The first pastorium was bought in 1904. On April 1, 1914, a Building Committee was formed because of a need for a new and larger buidling. On August 27, 1916, the name First Baptist Church was adopted in order to borrow money from the Home Mission Board for the new building. In 1914 the first Christmas offering of $3.00 was sent to China by the Missionary Society. In 1921, Edison Allen, a member of FBC, served as the first foreign missionary from FBC. He and his wife, Edith, served in Brazil for over 50 years.
