704-636-5081

First Baptist Church of Spencer was constructed on December 12, 1897, in the home of Mrs. E. M. Barnes. Mrs. Barnes and Mr. & Mrs. W. P. Campbell were the first charter members. Dr. J. N. Stallings became the first pastor, earning a salary of $60 per year. The first new members were received January 2, 1898, when Mr. and Mrs. Hunter and Miss Ora Hunter brought their letter from Burlington. On February 20, 1898, the little group moved into Smith Hall on the second floor of the Railroad building which stood at the corner of Fifth Street and Salisbury Avenue. On August 14, 1898, a building committee was appointed to make recommendations for a house of worship. During its first year, membership of the church grew to twenty-seven. In 1899, Rev. C. G. Wells became the second pastor. The Southern Railway gave the lot for the new church building which was completed in 1900; the first service was held in it on April 3, 1900.

Dr. L. Alan Sasser began his ministry on August 5, 1973. Dr. Sasser led the way in providing recreational activities for all groups, especially the youth; and he began a monthly newsletter. On July 18, 1979, Rev. M. Wayne Oakes became pastor. During his ministry, his emphasis was on what it means to be the church in evangelism and ministry to the needs of the community. Rev. Franklin Myers became our sixteenth pastor in August 1989 and is presently serving in this capacity. During his ministry, he has led the church in its centennial celebration, some major repairs have been made to the building, and an elevator has been installed.
