History

On February 22, 1973, the City of Lakewood, in cooperation with the County of Los Angeles Public Library, opened the George Nye, Jr. Library. The library is named for Lakewood Mayor George H. Nye, Jr. who died while serving in office in May 1971. The library is the second in the city and serves the population of the eastern area of the city which includes eight elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. An active Friends of the Library group was formed in 1972 and supports both Lakewood libraries - George Nye, Jr. and Angelo M. Iacoboni.

Together the City of Lakewood and the County Library, with help from many library supporters including Fourth District Supervisor Dean Dana, renovated the library in 1992. In 2002, the library was rearranged to create an enclosed picture book area with stuffed animals and rugs, a Homework Center with Internet and word processing computers and a "New" Book reading area. New furniture was provided by the County Library and the Friends of the Lakewood Libraries.
