Greenwood School
Greenwood School began with a group of parents interested in home schooling their children yet also wanting to enjoy the advantages of an educational community. The founding parents envisioned a school where the children could learn from the natural world through a curriculum that nurtured the unfolding of their capacities.
Starting with kindergarten, Greenwood School provided a gentle physical environment conducive to learning through exploration and play. As the children grew, they entered the primary school years and transitioned to a new mode of learning centered more in feeling and imagination, connected with artistic and academic experience.Six years later, parents and teachers decided to carry the grades through the middle school years, and refined the curriculum to fully meet the needs of the maturing student body. Committed teachers dedicated to meeting the inner and outer development of each child brought poetry, art, music, drama, gardening, song and movement into a strong academic foundation.
Central to the founding vision of the initial Greenwood School talks were the educational principles and goals: academic excellence, artistic and moral development through a Waldorf-inspired curriculum, awareness of the natural world and experience of its many wonders and challenges, and universal spirituality enfolding the many varied ways spirit is expressed around the world.
Greenwood School is "Waldorf-inspired" in the sense that we offer our students the many strengths associated with a Waldorf-style curriculum, yet our curriculum and pedagogy also embody many important contemporary advances in educational theory and practice. We are continually enhancing our school as it moves through the years, and to ensure we stay current with the changing world. Through our first twelve years, Greenwood School has remained relatively small, resisting the impulse to evolve into a larger institution. Year-round, parents and teachers work together to provid an educational environment that is uncompromising, balanced and inspiring.
