Handicapped Development Center

3402 Hickory Grove Road

Mission

The Handicapped Development Center is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to plan, establish and operate programs which provide opportunities and assistance to persons with disabilities in and around Scott County, Iowa.

History

Since 1969, the Handicapped Development Center has been a non-profit organization supporting people with disabilities. The Center began as a result of a citizen study sponsored by United Community Services of Scott County, which is now known as United Way. The study recommended the merger of four programs providing similar services. Those four groups were: Scott County Sheltered Workshop, Scott County Association for Retarded Children (Citizens), Scott County Council for the Handicapped, and the Scott County Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Recommending a more economical, efficient and effective system of delivery of services to persons with disabilities, the study suggested the programs unite. This collaboration has proved to be a successful partnership.
