Health Department And Community Health Center

3010 Grand Avenue
847-377-8000

Our primary mission, within the overall framework of Lake County government, is the promotion of health, the prevention of disease and disability, and the protection of our environment.

The Health Department was established by referendum in 1956, as a state-certified public health department. At that time, the staff consisted of a handful of people. In 1995, our primary care services and facilities were designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). In 1997, our behavioral health services were accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Today, our budget of approximately $50 million supports 60 separately funded programs. More than 720 professionals assist our daily mission of health promotion and illness prevention.

As the largest human service provider in Lake County, we believe that services must be available without barriers. No residents are turned away due to an inability to pay. We also believe in providing services in an environment of mutual respect, free of discrimination or bias.

The Health Department is governed by a 12-member Board of Health. Members, who volunteer their time, are appointed by the Lake County Board, and are Lake County residents of various backgrounds. Board meetings are held approximately once every six weeks at 3010 Grand Avenue, Waukegan, at 6:00 p.m. The Governing Council oversees planning and direction of operations for the Lake County Community Health Center. The majority of Council members are comprised of users of the Center's services. Meetings are held approximately once a month at noon at the Belvidere Medical Clinic, 2400 Belvidere Road in Waukegan. The Board of Health and Governing Council meetings are open to the public.

We are proud to be among the top 3 percent of the thousands of local health departments nationwide in terms of scope of services and budget. We thank the organizations we partner with to achieve our goals, as well as the Board of Health, our Governing Council and all Lake County Board members for their direction and leadership.
