Henderson County Public Library

301 North Washington Street
828-697-4725

About Us:

The Henderson County Public Library has been serving the people of our community since its doors first opened in a small facility on King Street in 1914, at which time the collection consisted of 514 books. The original building was made possible by a gift of property from Capt. Marion C. Toms and a gift of $10,000 from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. Known originally as the Hendersonville Library, it was operated by the city until 1952, when the county assumed shared responsibility. In 1957 the county assumed full responsibilty and the Library was renamed the Henderson County Public Library. To accomodate the rapidly growing needs of the community, a new larger building was opened at the present location on Washington Street in 1970. In 1990-91 new construction and renovation resulted in the present building, which opened in January 1992.
