History

Highland Area Chamber of Commerce Heritage

On January 14, 1906 the Highland Area Chamber of Commerce was formed by local citizens and began serving Highland. In 1908, at an Annual Chamber of Commerce banquet, retiring president C.L. Fraser gave a speech that still rings true ninety-two years later.

Fraser's speech gave the underlying results of the chamber's success and importance when he said, "a thorough organization with active alert members ready to grapple with every program when it arises, and the inauguration of such work that promises reasonable hope of success."

He continued, saying: "This banquet has brought us, the citizens of Highland, orange growers, merchants, ministers, professional men, all, in touch with our neighbors. It does us good to rub elbows with our neighbors. It does us good to realize that there is something in life besides the Eternal Grind. It does us good to rub elbows with our supervisors, the men who handle our public moneys, the judges who preside over our courts of justice, the officers of our sister organizations, and the men who through the press make and mold public opinion."

"Let us get as many as possible to join with us in this organization which has for its purpose the progress and improvement of Highland."

"Nature has made it one of the beauty spots of the earth. She has endowed it with a wealth of soil and climate unsurpassed on the globe, but it is for us to determine whether we can keep abreast of the progressive again in which we live."

Such sentiments resounded in the records throughout the years as the chamber grew and the area changed. These same sentiments are carried still by those who understand and embrace the chamber values and it's goals of working for the greater good of the Highland community. "On the Grow and Go" just for you is what the Highland Chamber is all about.
