About Us :
The first Young Men’s Christian Association was founded in London in June of 1844, by George Williams. Williams was concerned about the temptations facing the young men in the heart of the industrial revolution. As an effort to improve the spiritual and mental condition of young men, the YMCA was established offering Bible study and prayer meetings to everyone. The YMCA movement was a tremendous success and quickly spread to America in Boston, 1851.

YMCA was first organized in Jackson to promote religious principles and the advancement of the cause of Christ among the young men of our city. It was composed of members from the Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist churches but was interrupted by the civil war.

The Jackson Association continued to meet the demands of downtown Jackson by establishing The Capital Towers YMCA Wellness Center on the 20th floor of the Capital Towers building.

The Clinton YMCA opened a new 6,000 square foot aquatic center. The Reservoir YMCA expanded it’s youth sports program with the opening of Primos Park, a new soccer complex in Flowood, MS. The Southwest YMCA expanded child care services with the opening of a new 9,000 square foot Early Childhood Development Center providing child care 17 ½ hours a day, seven days a week.

Today, the Jackson Y is a Metropolitan Association serving Hinds, Madison, and Rankin counties through eight service units. The insights and wisdom of the leaders who have been involved in the Y’s history and the new leaders who join daily make the YMCA a powerful instrument for good will in our community.
