Jessie B. Mason Regional School

2720 Iverson Street
301-702-2890

Jessie B. Mason is a Public Separate Day School that provides educational services to more than 33 students, ages twelve to twenty one. This is a non-graded educational environment providing services to students with severe disabilities. Jessie B. Mason is located in Temple Hills Maryland and provides services to students from the local communities of Ft. Washington, Temple Hills, Oxon Hill, Suitland, Hillcrest Heights, Forestville, Camp Springs and Capitol Heights. The school is in Region I with Janice Briscoe as the Assistant Superintendent.

In order to meet the requirements of educating students with complex physical, intellectual, communicative, social/emotional needs and fragile medical conditions, Jessie B. Mason provides an educational setting with specialized equipment, highly trained and educated staff as well as an intensive staff to student ratio. Four of the five classrooms encompass a specialized curriculum. This curriculum is the Mobility Opportunities Via Education (M.O.V.E), which is implemented in all classrooms at the present time. M.O.V.E. strategies are informally infused across the entire program to meet the students’ needs.

Every student has an individualized educational plan which is created by a multidisciplinary team. The team includes a special educator, counselor, motor, aquatics, speech, OT, PT and vision specialists, and parents. The IEP is a legal document that outlines goals, objectives, services, program and placement.

The Regional school supports students with multiple disabilities whose needs cannot be met in a less restrictive environment with a teacher student ratio of 2:6 in a self-contained classroom. Students are taught Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum using math and reading content standard s; within a functional life skills program. The functional skills program provides instruction that is relevant to the student’s ability to function more independently in six domain areas: 1. Academics (math, reading, science and social studies), 2.Communication/Decision-Making/Interpersonal, 3. Career/Vocational, 4. Community, 5. Personal, 6. Recreation/leisure skills. Related Services are delivered through a transdisciplinary team approach. Students participate in ALT-MSA and will graduate from Prince George’s County Schools with a certificate of completion.
