Kent Perbysterian Church

History

The Presbyterian Church of Kent was the vision of the Presbytery of Cleveland. Wanting to establish a Presbyterian presence near Kent State University, the church was initiated as a mission effort and remains the only Presbyterian (USA) congregation in Portage County.

Formally organized in 1960, the church met for several years at Central Elementary School in Kent, until a sanctuary (now part of the Christian Education wing) was completed in 1964. The larger, present sanctuary was built in 1969 with a significant amount of construction labor given by members of the congregation.

From 1981-1988, Kent Presbyterian Church experienced significant growth. The Christian Education facility was added in 1986. During our 40 year history we have sought to meet the spiritual needs of the community and university population from our unique Reformed heritage.

Values

A commitment to the ministry by every Christian. We believe God has graced every Christian with specific gifts to be used in building up the church body and carrying out Christ's reconciling mission in the world.

A commitment to local and global mission. As Christ-followers, we will support and involve ourselves in ministries of peace, justice, and the stewardship of God's creation, witnessing to God's love in Jesus Christ through word and deed.

A commitment to growth. We believe that our congregation should grow, in numbers as well as in spiritual understanding, in the practice of the teachings of the gospel, in reliance on prayer, and in devotion to Jesus Christ.

A commitment to relevant biblical preaching and teaching. We believe the Bible is God's Word to humanity, the authoritative, timeless and timely rule of faith and practice for Christians, relevant to the common needs of all people. We are committed to equipping Christians through the preaching and teaching of God's Word, to follow Christ in all of life.
