History

Kermit Independent School District is located in the city of Kermit in Winkler County, Texas, in the middle of the Permian Basin, and encompasses 398.09 square miles . The city of Kermit is located just under the southeast corner of New Mexico at the intersection of State Highways 18, 115, and 302, approximately 46 miles west of Odessa. Kermit's main industries include ranching and petroleum production & transportation. Although the 2000 census places Kermit with under 6000 residents, population has been growing recently due to the ongoing oil boom. The district is fully accredited (PK-12) by the Texas Education Agency.

Kermit Independent School District serves appoximately 1300 students, and employs nearly 250 employees. The District is classed as a 2A school district for UIL competition. Our District currently is home to:

* Kermit High School, grades 9-11
* Kermit Junior High, grades 6-8
* Purple Sage Elementary, grades 3-5
* East Primary Elementary, grades Pre-Kinder to 2

The District's Motto for the 2007-2008 school year is "Constructing Our Future." The theme refers both to the literal physical construction process and figuratively to mental construction of able minds.

KISD is in the middle of a facilities construction bond project totalling $33 million. Construction has already begun on the new elementary school, which will combine all students from the two current elementaries. Upon completion, work on the new high school will begin. Other facility upgrades are also ongoing.
