Mount Olive Lutheran Church Of Columbia

1541 Lake Murray Boulevard
803-781-5845

Mount Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1931. Being without a church building, worship services were conducted for about two months on the lawn of one of the members until a store building was rented in Irmo. In January, 1932 approximately two acres of the present site were purchased and a temporary building was erected by the members using lumber cut from nearby property.

Even though it had no floor, the structure was used as a place of worship during the building of the church. It continued to be used for social activities after the present sanctuary was constructed. A floor was added in 1944, and the building was used until 1949.

The present sanctuary was constructed in 1933 with a loan of $2000 from the Lutheran Church Extension Fund. With this financial aid and much donated labor on the part of the members, it was possible on August 27, 1933, to dedicate the brick structure that continues to serve the congregation today. In 1949 the first floor of the educational building was built.

The second floor was added in 1963, and at that time the interior of the sanctuary was also renovated. During renovation, services were held in the auditorium of Irmo School. In 1968 the beautiful stained glass windows which grace the sanctuary were purchased and installed.
