About us

So, it came about. The name "Presbyterian Church of Mowrsytown, Ohio" was registered on May 10, 1904 with the Ohio Secretary of State as the corporate name. This was agreed upon by each Church. Combined services continued in the building of the Whiteoak Church which had been erected in 1888. The overflow created by the merger created a need for a new building, so the 1888 church building was razed by the members of the congregation. In 1916 and 1917 a new edifice was erected. Elsie Stevens Plummer says in her memories of this time that: "...it was possible only because of the great amount of donated labor and the generosity of those who furnished materials, and by the gifts from members of the United Church as well as many who were well wishers. The building was dedicated on September 2, 1917 by Dr. Moses Breeze of Columbus, Ohio." She also remembered the long hitching rack where the horses and buggies stood during services, memories of the smell of evergreens, Mose Jodry rehearsing the choir in their anthems for Christmas and Easter, Grandma Tissot bringing in her big basket of colored eggs for the youngsters. At the time of dedication in 1917, Thomas G. Melton served as pastor of the church which he had served earlier when he was a student at Lame seminary in Cincinnati. In addition, Dr. W. H. Shields of Hillsboro and Rev. W. H. Christian of Georgetown took part in the morning service. Thomas G. Melton also served as principal of the Whiteoak High School for some time.
