On March 16, 1846, North Fayette became an entity of its own. As the former Fayette Township, named after General LaFayette, it was noted for more Indian outrages than any other township in Allegheny County. The Land was once roamed by Indians on the Mingo Trail, served as the Underground Railway for slaves escaping from the South and was one of the richest regions of bituminous coal. North Fayette Township is now a diversified community consisting of 27 square miles including a mixture of rural and urban lifestyles. The center of the Township is located 15 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh and 10 miles from Pittsburgh International Airport.

North Fayette Township is part of the West Allegheny School District and home to Pittsburgh Technical Institute and the Pointe at North Fayette Shopping Center. The 2000 Census list North Fayette Township with a population of 12,254 and the third fastest growing municipality in Allegheny County. The Township is a composition of many contrasting yet compatible features. The anticipated expansion of services and land development holds a future that promises to offer even more.
