Toms River - Ocean County Fair

1623 Whitesville Road

The Ocean County Board of Agriculture held the first annual "4-H Achievement and Agricultural Ocean County Field Day" on September 6, 1947.

The event was held at Ocean County Park in Lakewood and was organized to celebrate 4-H club work and the agricultural prowess of Ocean County, NJ. By 1947, Ocean County had become the center of a thriving cranberry industry and was ranked 8th in the United States in the poultry industry. The total annual agricultural income of the county topped $12 million in 1946.

The first "Ocean County Field Day" in 1947 included a handful ofexhibits by 4-H clubs, a few concession stands and an attendance of approximately 500 people.

By 1967, the 1-day "Ocean County Field Day" had become a 3-day "Ocean County Fair" with the participation of over 80 4-H clubs, hundreds of exhibitors, scores of concession stands and an attendance of over 60,000 people.

The fair expanded to include more aspects of Ocean County life, including: 4-H and youth activities, agricultural production, marine and natural resource development, and homemaking pursuits.

The ‹1967 Ocean County Fair was also a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Ocean County Extension Service. Extension Services takes knowledge gained through research and education, and uses it to bring about positive change in the community.

To accomodate the fair's growth, in 1982 the Ocean County Fair was expanded to a 4-day event, and moved to its current location at Robert Miller Airpark, Berkeley Township.

The Ocean County Fair remains a non-profit educational event for the celebration of the entire Ocean County community.

The Fair is organized and executed by a committee of volunteers.

A lot of fun! Set your expectations correctly and you will have a lot of fun! Remember this is an old fashion 4 h type fair. Not an amusement park . You gotta appreciate old fashion values where your children can pet farm animals..and see projects done by local children! Really enjoyed the dog act and the woodcarving! Food is typical fair style... dogs burgers and a few different truck style.. don't expect gourmet! All in all a great time!
