Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Cal. State Univ. Channel Islands

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute extends learning opportunities to mature adults.

To accommodate mature adults, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Cal State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) conducts classes in many locations in Ventura Country. We also have classes in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria.

OLLI offers educational classes for persons over 50. These classes, while of University caliber, do not have tests, grades, or college credits, but are for intellectual stimulation only. OLLI has been offering courses in Ventura County since 2004.

OLLI classes are held in Ventura, Thousand Oaks, Ojai, and Simi Valley and of course at the CSUCI campus in Camarillo. To accommodate people's schedules, some classes meet in the evening or on Saturdays, though most are on week days. Winter classes begin the week of January 10 and run for eight weeks. Enrollment is now open, and continues until classes begin.

Within a short drive for Ventura County residents, a class will be offered in Carpinteria on "James Joyce's Ulysses and Irish Culture".

In Santa Barbara, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara, two courses will be offered: "Therapeutic Music to Harmonize the Human Psyche" and "Out of Africa: The Evolution of Homo Sapiens and the Peopling of the Earth During the Late Pleistocene". The first shows how music qualities of sound vibration, tone, and rhythm are connected to memory, self-esteem, relaxation and creativity. The second is quite different, examining the evolution of modern humans and how people ventured out of Africa to settle in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Americas. The course will explore fossil evidence, archaeology, genetics, and paleoenvironmental data.

More information about courses at all locations and enrollment information can be found on www.csuci.edu/exed/osher.htm, or by calling 437-2478. The fee for one course is $85.00. For $170, students may enroll in an unlimited number of courses in the fall.
