Post Oak Baptist Church

900 Bluegrass Avenue

In 1922, a group of preachers from Bethel College became interested in holding services in the old Post Oak School located approximately three miles from Russellville on Highway 79 West. Interested neighbors soon joined the preachers in worship resulting in the forming of Post Oak Baptist Church.

Following the message by Bro. S.T. (Thus) Locke on August 27, 1922, eleven brothers and sisters in Christ presented themselves as charter members. Trustees were immediately appointed along with a building committee. Bro. Locke was officially called as pastor on January 28, 1923. On March 24, 1923, a Sunday School was organized and the church's first deacons were ordained on March 25, 1923.

On January 20, 1924, Bro. Foster Howard became Post Oak's second pastor. Post Oak's new building was dedicated to our Lord on June 8, 1924. Under the leadership of Bro. Drexal Hankins, new Sunday School rooms were built in September of 1945. Eight additional Sunday School rooms were added in 1954 under the leadership of Bro. Joe Carrico.

Post Oak called their third pastor, Bro. E.W. Moss, in January, 1925. He was followed by Bro. John Thomas in 1926, Bro. A.F. Gordon in 1928, Bro. Williard Everson in 1932, and Dr. F.M. Masters in 1933. In June 1935, Bro. Reed Rushing became pastor, followed by Bro. Marvin Stinson in 1936, Bro. Drexal Hankins in 1944, and Bro. E.E. Daniels in 1949.

Bro. Joseph A. Carrico became the pastor at Post Oak on December 18, 1953, and continued as pastor until the end of December 1994. During Bro. Joe's tenure as pastor, Post Oak's membership grew to more than 1500. Current pastor, Bro. Wilbur Powell, began his ministry with Post Oak in January 1995.

In April 1958, Post Oak moved to Brookhaven subdivision. A month later the facilities on Highway 79 West were given and deeded to the newly organized Woodlawn Baptist Church. This church consisted of those members who chose to remain at the original location rather than to worship at the new Brookhaven location. The church added the current educational building in 1971 and expanded the sanctuary in 1982. Stained glass windows were added to the sanctuary in 1999. These windows were provided by church families 'In Memory' or 'In Honor' of loved ones. A pavilion was also constructed in 1999 along with a portico and drive through lane in 2000.

History is a revelation of our past. It also serves as the launching pad for our future. Let us praise God for both and let us remain focused on His purpose through the ministries of Post Oak Baptist Church.
