Rochester Country Club

94 Church Street
603-332-0985

History

The old Rochester Country Club was built in 1904 off of Walnut Street, north of Rochester, and featured a nine-hole "golf links" style course. It was a picturesque setting with a small pond on the premises used for fishing and skating in the winter. It had a life span of 18 years until the new and present club house was constructed in 1922 off Route 125 in Gonic on farm land purchased from Joseph Warren. The old club house was abandoned and sold at auction to Charles Watson for a bid of $300.

The new club house was opened in November, 1922. The October 27th, 1922 Rochester Courier says, "A magnificent location on the hill on the Joseph Warren farm on the road from Gonic to East Barrington...The clubhouse of brick is without a superior in entire state...To be kept warm in winter...Winter sports planned...Golf course already in excellent condition.

Rochester has the reputation of never doing anything by halves and all who have seen this new clubhouse agree that the Rochester Country Club has maintained the honor of the city in this regard in the highest degree.“ In 1961, the clubhouse was completely remodeled inside. At that time, the Pro Shop was added and the swimming pool built. The club opened it's new nine holes officially on June 23rd, 1964. Designed by Phil Wogan of Beverly, Massachusetts, the "back nine" was built by Eugene Wogan & Sons.
