The mission of the Slate River School is to create a community that fosters the lifelong love of learning and development of the whole child in mind, body and spirit through child centered education.

Philosophy

We believe in nurturing the whole child through a curriculum that celebrates the journey of learning. Our school strives to achieve specific educational objectives in a noncompetitive, respectful, multiage, small class environment that builds confidence, self-awareness, and compassion for others. We are dedicated to the fulfillment of potential in each child by inspiring independent thinking and resourcefulness through experiential and cooperative learning. The Slate River School is committed to positive social change through our belief that to enrich the child is to enrich the community and the world. We educate the whole child by addressing the needs of mind, body and spirit.

The Mind: All students at the Slate River School will be able to navigate successfully in today's world with an appreciation for and skill in all core acedemic subject areas. Their love of learning and natural curiosity are nurtured as they are encouraged to think creatively and imaginatively.

The Body: Learning takes place through movement and hands-on experience. Through daily yoga, music and dance, and active immersion in nature, our students learn the importance of self-confidence, body awareness, and healthy lifestyles.

The Spirit: Students are inspired to experience the world as their teacher so they naturally progress as stewards of the community. We provide an environment where children feel safe and secure and can think and express themselves openly. Our curriculum emphasizes a consciousness and respect for each other, themselves, and the environment.
