Organized in 1986, the Society strives to preserve the unique heritage of Smithsburg and surrounding area, and to transmit it intact to future generations in an authentic and meaningful manner. But, in a larger context, the Society attempts to instill a sense of civic pride in all residents of the town through recognition of significant local contributions and achievements which began when the first settlement was founded in 1787.
