Toby Johnson Middle School! We are now in our fifth year of operation and we are currently serving 1475 students in grades 7 and 8. Our innovative 4 x 4 block schedule has proven to be a powerful delivery model for our students, as Toby Johnson students receive not only a rigorous core academic program, but they can select from over 18 different elective classes.

In the spring of 2006, our students participated in the State STAR testing, and the results of these tests confirmed that Toby Johnson is a very special school. Our school’s “Academic Performance Index” (API) rose for the fourth straight year to 835, which is the highest ranking of any middle or high school in the Elk Grove Unified School District.

While we are very proud of our students’ accomplishments on the State testing, we are even prouder of the fact that they are outstanding young people who are learning the value of community service. The school has established four (4) core values (Integrity, Character, Community and Scholarship) and these values were put into practice in fund raising efforts to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Our students raised nearly $4000 to donate to the Salvation Army.

Toby Johnson is committed to the development of well-rounded young people who will grow up to be contributing members of the community, Our school recognizes student achievement in a number of ways, but our highest award is the Royal J Award, which is given to those students who demonstrate that they are not only exceptional students, but that they have developed their leadership skills; they have provided service to both the school and community; and they have demonstrated their range of talent in a number of areas outside the classroom.

If you are a new student to our school, I would like to encourage you to get involved at Toby Johnson and maximize your time at our school. You will only be with us for two years, and the time will pass by very quickly. My advice to you is to join the Royal J Club as soon as you arrive on campus because this club will help you to stay focused and get the most out of your time at Toby Johnson. Do not allow yourself to be a “spectator” during these two years. Instead strive to be a “participant” who works hard in their classes, while at the same time balancing out the academics with a few extracurricular activities
