Town of Deepwater

13 Highway, Near Truman Lake

The plat of the original town of Deepwater was filed on March 5, 1885. What started this small Missouri town? Deepwater sat upon a wealth of clay and coal. Due to that wealth, Keith and Perry Coal Co moved into the area in March of 1884 and soon after, in November 1884, George H. Nettleton became interested in the area for railroad. Keith and Perry Coal Co. went to work building a clay products factory. The coal mining began along with a fine brick building for their company store. W. S. Dickey entered the town in 1888, leasing the tile factory from Keith and Perry Coal Co. and eventually purchasing it a few years later. In 1896, the factory was destroyed by fire. On June 27, 1898, the new brick building was opened and dedicated with grandeur by the folks of Deepwater. This was just the beginning...
