Town Of Morningside

6901 Ames Street
301-736-2300

About Us:

In 1949, a brave group of locals incorporated a piece of land near Andrews Air Force Base. The Prince George’s County plot, which conveniently forms a triangle, was given the name of Morningside. During the time of its origination, the area was behind times. Residents had no access to paved roads and were forced to rely on water and septic takes for their utilities. In the beginning, the town was overrun with World War II veterans, but that was all about to change.

During the late 70s, the town’s population began aligning itself more closely to what it is today. Once the 20th century had come to a conclusion, veterans only equated to a quarter of the population. Many new residents serviced the local governmental agencies. Change was plentiful. Citizens quickly gained access to sewage systems, paved roads, public water, and storm sewers. Streets lights were installed and two new schools, Morningside Elementary School and the Traditional School, were erected.

The town, which is also known as the “Gateway to the National’s Capital”, is located near the Andrews Air Fore Base. Although it might not be easily recognizable to those outside of the area, some of the world’s most influential individuals, including members of Congress, presidents, kings, and queens, have travelled the streets of Morningside, while in route to their flights. Throughout history, locals have witnesses some of the happiest moments, as well as those that devastated the nation. As the Iran hostages returned to the United States, Morningside residents watched on. As John F. Kennedy, progressed from Dallas to Washington, they watched on. And they still do so today.

The town is home to around 2,000 individuals of various background and ethnicities. At one point in time, Prince George’s County planners believed the town would fail to thrive and slump into chaos sometime in the early 60s. With the help of longtime mayor, Gerald A. Glaubitz, the town was able to hush the naysayers. The beloved, unforgettable mayor passed away in April of 2005. Although Morningside is steeped in history, current residents maintain the opinion that the town’s best days remain ahead.
