Town Of Winfall

P.O. Box 275
252-426-5015

History:

Winfall serves primarily as a residential area with growing commercial facilities. The topography of Winfall is relatively flat with elevations ranging from mean sea level to about 17 feet above the National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD).

Winfall has made many changes in the past years. These changes affect our lifestyles today. Although the population and businesses have decreased since the last decade, Winfall is slowly, but surely regaining its growth. This gradual progression includes the building of new modern businesses, the erection of Winfall Landing Park, The New Wetlands which is being used for school tours of education as well, and the construction of a Wastewater System and Natural Gas.

Winfall's population of 561is represented by the Mayor and the town council. The current Mayor of Winfall is Frederick L. Yates and the council consists of Mayor-Pro-Tempore Kenneth Rominger, Bertha Dixon, Donna Mummert , and Clifford Towe.

Winfall's police protection is under the supervision of its Police Chief David Shaffer.

Another form of protection in Winfall is its fire department, which consists of 20 members. Gerald Christian is the chief of this completely voluntary group of dedicated men. Many homes and lives have been saved as a result of the courageous efforts of this department.

A major contribution to Winfall's growth is that two of the four schools in Perquimans County are located here. These schools are Perquimans Central Elementary and Perquimans Middle School. Central's classes include Pre-K through second grade with William Stallings as Principal. Middle School classes range from sixth to eighth grades with Melvin Hawkins as Principal and Jamie Liverman as Assistant Principal. The very fine teachers of these schools have aided in the educational growth of not just Winfall, but Perquimans County as a whole.

Our community owes a debt of gratitude to our existing Mayor, Frederick L. Yates who is presently serving his sixth term. He was sensitive enough to see potential in a community that was at a standstill and began to pursue various avenues which would bring freshness to the community. Under his leadership, a sewer system has been installed. The Winfall Landing Park and a new municipal building which houses the Administrative Offices, Police Department, and a Community Center. Other accomplishments under Yates' administration include the newly erected Wetland which is a project of the Resource Conservation and Development Council, and the North Carolina Northeast Natural Gas which is beginning construction.

Friendsship gardens grace some of the main streets which are also lined with crepe myrtles. These are efforts of the Beautification Committee of Winfall and the NC Department of Transportation.
