7241 West Chester Pike

History of Upper Darby Fire Company:

Upper Darby Fire Company #1 was formed and chartered in 1916. The Eastern end of the township felt a need for more fire protection. The original firehouse was located on the 7100 block of West Chester Pike. Around 1961-62 the firehouse was moved to it's current location at 7241 West Chester Pike. The firehouse originally housed 1-Seagrave 1250 g.p.m. pumper; 1-Seagrave 500 g.p.m. combination truck; 1-85 ft. tractor drawn ladder, and a Cadillac Ambulance. The station now houses 1-2001 Seagrave Quint; 1-Stuphen 1250 g.p.m. pumper, and a 200 EVI utility truck .

When the company started the membership included 75 active firemen and a Ladies Auxiliary of 50 members. The active crew now consists of about 30 members, and an active life membership of about 20 people. Although Upper Darby Fire Company covers the smallest first due district, the company has the highest amount of emergency calls in the county with the exception of Chester City let alone the highest amount of calls in the township.
