Southern Traditions showcases the richness and diversity of the Museum’s world-class collection of furniture, ceramics, silver, basketry, sculpture and paintings by artists native to, or active in, South Carolina and its surrounding states. Among the works are fine silver made by Charleston and Columbia silversmiths; a sweet grass basket by Mary Jackson (South Carolina, born 1945); wood carvings by Edgar Alexander McKillop (North Carolina, 1879-1950); and paintings by Charles Fraser (South Carolina, 1782-1860), Xanthus Russell Smith (South Carolina, 1839-1929), William Harrison Scarborough (South Carolina, 1812-1871), William Aiken Walker (South Carolina, 1838-1921), and others. By consolidating these works into one gallery, visitors can easily explore the centuries-long artistic traditions of South Carolina and the Southeast region.
