I am writing to inform you of a policy change that will become effective on Monday, February 26, 2007, at our school. This change relates to students checking into school late in the mornings. While this policy change will affect relatively few students, it is important to address a problem that exists with some students who habitually check into school late.

The first bell rings at AHS at 7:55 AM signaling students to report to their first period classes. At 8:00 AM, students are expected to be in class. Students who report to school after the 8:00 AM bell will check in at the office to receive a tardy slip and an admit to their first period class. Students will be allowed 3 (three) tardies before any disciplinary action will be taken by the school. It is our intention to make a call home to notify you of the time when your child checks in late. Upon the fourth tardy, your child will be subject to disciplinary action.

Students who check into school with a doctor's or dentist's excuse, court appearance documentation, or a funeral statement of an immediate family member will receive excused tardies. These tardies will not count as a penalty against your child. However, tardies that result from car problems, including parent notes and parent phone calls to the school, will count as unexcused tardies. Such tardies will be considered as part of the three tardies that are allowed to each student. Lastly, this new policy does not change the current policy related to class tardies during the school day.
