"Relay for Life, is a fun, family-friendly way to take part in the fight against cancer," shares Joel Henderson, 2010 Benefit Committee Chair. Committee and volunteer recruitment is underway for a first year 'Collegedale Community Fest -- Relay For Life' event on Sunday, March 21, which will take place at Collegedale's Veterans Memorial Park.
"Our goal is to paint the town purple for the passion for the cure," states Henderson. "Or at least to have as many indiviudals, businesses, schools, churches, and civic group partners display purple, to increase awareness and participate in this years cancer benefit."
'Relay For Life' is a grass-roots, volunteer driven event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the local American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people will take turns walking or running laps around the park, with a requested $10 donation in support of the benefit. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. This event includes live musical performances and lots of other fun activities to occur throught the afternoons festivities, including a special fireworks display at dusk.
Committee members and volunteers are needed to help organize the event and to handle logistics, promotions, children’s activities, sponsorship and team recruitment.
The next 'Relay for Life' committee meeting is being planned for the Tueday, Feburary 23 at 5:30 PM and will be held in the East Room at Collegedale City Hall. "We are looking for great leaders and team captains for Collegedale's Relay For Life," said Lauren Davenport, local development representative with the American Cancer Society. "Where else can you have so much fun and support such an important cause?"
Money raised from the event supports American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient service programs.
