Jampact at The Bath House Cultural Center

category:Arts and Entertainment posted:March 20th, 2009

Jampact plays an original mix that echoes of many moments in American Jazz.  These five well rounded players/composers glide effortlessly from blues to gospel to fusion to the standards of Ellington, Monk, Miles as well as their own well grounded originals.

In other words, they're not trying to find a niche.  The quintet freely embraces the universe of Jazz and all of its siblings inclusively.

Oddly, there's no leader though every one of them is capable of taking charge.  In order of instrumentation, trumpeter Akira Sato and trombonist Kim Corbet are the de facto horn section with an all-star rhythm section consisting of the legendary Mohamed Brothers, Jamal and Buddy, on bass and drums.  The most publicly visible is pianist Jose Bowen, dean of SMU's Meadows Art School and the most prolific composer in the band.

Jampact also functions as the SMU Faculty Jazz Quintet which sounds austere and academic.  One taste of their free-wheeling improvisational grooves and humorous vocals and asides reveal a streetwise even goofy combo of jazz cats hangin out havin fun. Because that's what they really are...five friends who love playing
together and sharing that joy with whoever happens to be in earshot.
